Abstract

What started as an experiment, ended in an exercise in architectural scenography.

The experiment mainly consisted of tests on how to ‘build’ with soil: from baking clay to making moulds for rammed earth models. It gave the opportunity to gain experience on building with earth, sand and cement.

The work of Lucien Hervé and Adolphe Appia were the main source of inspiration.

With the skills gained by the earth experiments and intensive study of Hervé’s photography and Appia’s sketches, a series of sculptures were made.

In a final phase, the earth models were placed in different scenes and different landscapes. A process of trying over and over again. The photography of these scenes were printed analogue: screen prints, a printing method with a grain. By printing manually, the scenography of the sculptures came even closer to the work of Hervé and Appia.
