Abstract

Finding an empty or available space in the centre of Ghent to work several weeks on an installation.

The location was a deserted building next to the Baudelopark. The only use of the building was during winter time to shelter homeless people of Ghent.

The room was all empty and the only thing present, was an old fashioned fan. Because of the emptiness and the homelessness of the space, the idea was to make something to fill it. To give something to the people and that could make them wonder.

The fan felt like a perfect object to start from. It was central in the room and because it still worked, it had the possibility to make something moveable.

The choice of material was naturally defined by the object itself. The fan didn't allow heavy weight.

When the fan was not turning, this space and the installation were a quiet still-life. But when the fan started running, the movement gave something calming and wonderful to the room.
